Theme of International Day of Peace 2019

Peace Day or International Day of Peace is celebrated annually on 21st September around the world and also known as World Peace Day. Peace Day is celebrated to encourage people among the countries also a day of ceasefire. International Day of Peace was declared by the UN General Assembly as this day is dedicated to ideals of peace both within and among all the nations and people.

Every year United Nations decided the theme for International Day of Peace to promote peace among the people of all nations. Last year the theme of 2018 peace day was “The Right To Peace” and this year the theme of International Day of Peace is ” Climate Action for Peace“.

This theme was decided under the Sustainable Development Goal 13 “Climate Action” which is an immediate call for the greenhouse emissions and to improve education on Climate Change. The Sustainable Goals covers a broad range of issues including poverty, health, education, climate change, hunger, gender equality, water, sanitation, environment, and social justice

This year theme draws attention to the issues and importance of climate change which is a new way to promote peace among the people throughout the world. Climate Change is a major threat to peace and security which can cause Natural disasters three times as the conflicts between many people.

According to climate change, water crises can become a clear threat to peace and as per the current situation of water crises in the world, it can create war-like situations among the countries.

Peace can be only achieved by taking strict actions, speaking to young people in New Zealand the UN Secretary-General António Guterres  said that “Nature does not negotiate” the Government should take four key measures like tax pollution, the subsidizing of fossil fuel should be stopped, building of new coal plants should be stopped by 2020, should focus on making green economy, not grey.

On 15 May 2019, the Secretary-General António Guterres said, that “It is possible to achieve our goals, but we need decisions, political will, and transformational policies to allow us to still live in peace with our own climate.”


In 1981, International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations and after two decades later in 2001, the General Assembly voted the day as a period of Non-Violence and Cease-fire. After that in 2002, the U.N. declared it is a permanent holiday.

What youth can do for Peace Day

This year International Day of peace for Student Observance will inspire our youth to step out for a challenge of climate change, half of the youth around the world are taking action on climate change in their homes, schools, and communities.

The Student Observance will take place on 20th September 2019 at United Nations Headquarters, which will help in providing a platform for young people who made projects undertaken to fight for climate change while promoting peace.
